'The Warriors' Duet' is almost gone!

Our short and sweet remounting of our beautiful Dance/Theatre presentation of Charlene Baldridge's 'The Warriors' Duet' must close at the White Box Theatre tomorrow afternoon.

To say that it has been a pleasure would be an understatement.  This production has graced CCdd's world, and we will be eternally grateful to Charlene, and of course to Laura- for allowing us to be a part of their story.  To us, this is what Community-Based Theatre is all about: giving a voice to those that want to speak, and that's what Laura desired with her prolific passion for poetry on the eve of her battle with Cancer.

Her words are life-affirming, passionate, and ever inspirational.  You simply do not want to miss this piece, because you too deserve to be touched by this beautiful woman's words.

We are so honored to be trusted with her amazing voice.

We hope to see you at the show!  Tickets are still available here!

Tiny Bubbles by Samantha Ginn

POP!  I GRADUATED!  I moved my tassel from the right to left.  I was officially a college graduate from Sonoma State University.  I was on top of the world!  …….Or was I?

Leaving college was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.  No longer did I have a daily routine that involved some sort of acting class, nightly plans with friends from all over the world, or a defending title of “Beer Pong” champion.  I was living back at home in San Diego with my parents.  Separated from my closest friends, jobless, and back in my bedroom with posters of “Backstreet Boys” still on the wall.  Needless to say, the post collegiate depression hit hard.

For the first time in my life I felt like I was not truly LIVING.  I was too scared to go out on auditions.  I did not want to be rejected……so I figured…..If I don’t go……I won’t be rejected!  I hardly left my house because the unknown made me anxious.   I lived in my own little bubble of fear.

Over time, I have learned that FEAR is a four letter word.  It is an enemy that one cannot see.  I feared the worst, so I wasn’t living the BEST.

This epiphany came to me while rehearsing for “The Warriors’ Duet.”  Laura Morefield was diagnosed with stage IV Colon Cancer in 2008.  The worst had come.  Did she succumb to her own bubble of fear?......No she did not.  She blew bubbles instead.

I’m so honored to portray the wonderful daughter of Charlene Baldridge in this upcoming production.  Laura shows us how to look Fear in the face and dance with it.  During her struggle with cancer, she wrote poetry that rose above the “invaders.”  Poetry about faith, love, and determination. A true warrior.  She wrote about body surfing, planting blackberries, dancing and singing with your loved ones, traveling, the beauty of family, and the small tasks of daily creation that make this world beautiful.

Laura has forever changed the way I live my life.  I no longer want to live in those bubbles of fear.  I want to blow bubbles, let them ascend………”and then dance in the eternal moment.   DANCE.”

Thank you for this gift Laura.

We're a Non Profit!

'Warriors' Duet' is a week and a half away and we started work on additional projects, but we want to take a moment this week to give a big shout out to  John H Barkley, Partner at Shustak & Partners, P.C. who helped us to file for our 501(c)3 Non-Profit license.  The process started 2 years ago right around the time of our first MORP.  John helped us to complete the arduous paperwork and make sense of the legal jargon.  Then we waited for what seemed like an eternity and now the work has proved worth it.  We feel so proud and we hope to serve our community to the best of our ability, and this new status will allow us to do so even more.

There are big plans for our 2013/2014 Season (which we will be announcing next week), and we can't wait to share our work with you!  We are looking for grants that will help fund our efforts, now that we qualify, and we are full of hope and inspiration.

And in case you didn't know, being a 501(c)3 means that all contributions to our organization are now tax-deductible.  So if you love our work and want us to help make our goals of finding a space, paying all artists, and having bigger budgets for our productions- a donation can be made right here:https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?contribution=c2d2 .

But most importantly- come check out our dance/theatre adaptation of Charlene Baldridge's beautiful work: 'The Warriors' Duet'!

"In Defense of Sorrow"- A Guest Blog by Charlene Baldridge

In defense of Sorrow

by Charlene Baldridge

 Laura, and Charlene.

Who wants to go to “the saddest play ever written”?

Who wants act in or direct or choreograph such a work?

Of what value is such a thing?

Why should such work exist?

The Warriors’ Duet emerged as the result of a dream encounter with my daughter Laura about six months after she died. I’d just finished fulfilling her last request of me – that I collect and edit her post-diagnosis poems, which were written over a period of three years as she fought stage 4 colon cancer. She considered these poems to be her best work and so do I. They are courageous, determined, funny and full of faith.

So here she was, standing before me, dressed as Groucho Marx – twirling a cigar and speaking in a Groucho tone of voice – so like her. She used to dress in drag as a teen, heading out the door to meet friends for a late night screening of “Rocky Horror.”

Laura/Groucho said, “Okay, Miss Mommy. What next?”

What next was The Warriors’ Duet, which I conceived as a music stand reading for two actors. After a music stand reading Warriors became something else entirely though the vision of Katie Harroff and Anne Gehman.

Bonds of love are not broken by death. Grief just changes their appearance. As poet/playwright Oscar Wilde wrote in De Profundis:

“Sorrow is that mode of existence in which Soul and Body are one and indivisible, in which the outward is expressive of the inward. Behind Joy and Laughter there may be a temperament, coarse, hard, and callous. But behind Sorrow there is always Sorrow. Pain, unlike Pleasure, wears no mask. For this reason there is no truth comparable to Sorrow. Out of Sorrow have the worlds been built, and at the birth of a child or a star there is pain. Pleasure for the beautiful Body, and Pain for the beautiful Soul. My affectionate friends! Where there is Sorrow there is holy ground. What lies before you is my past.”

Please bring your beautiful soul to witness the joy and mystery of the mother/daughter bond – our two souls, our two voices intertwined for eternity – when Circle Circle dot dot remounts their award-winning, critically acclaimed production of The Warriors’ Duet  September 5-8 at the White Box Live Arts.

Tickets are available right HERE.
