Why Site-Specific?

Kat Byrd and Whitney Shay- Cute Cast members of "San Diego, I Love You"

The performance of “San Diego, I Love You” is almost only 1 week away and we’re thrilled.  Final rehearsals are underway, we have been revealing our fun remake romantic movie posters with all of the cast each week, and the time spots for each performance are filling up quickly!  (Hopefully you know what that means!  Hint, hint.)  We love this piece.  The story is light-hearted, super sweet but still a little racy- we are Circle Circle dot dot after all.

However, when we describe the piece to our friends and families, some of them aren’t too familiar with ‘site-specific’ performances and are a little curious as to why we made this choice for our second show of our second season.  So we’ll clear things up for you with a few simple reasons:

       1. Location, location, location!

You know what’s hard about being a nomadic theatre company?  Finding affordable places to perform.  We have been having a swell time at the 10th Ave. Theater and will continue to produce shows there, but we needed the opportunity to present elsewhere, and the 10th Ave is filling up time spots like crazy.  We knew we wanted to present a February show because last year’s ‘Love Roulette’ was such a success for us.  The idea of presenting something site-specific came organically in a meeting, it was something like this:

“Hey, we need to do a February show like Love Roulette, but not Love Roulette, and maybe with more of one through storyline since Street. Art. Prophets. was a couple of short stories, and maybe we should do it somewhere site-specific like at our favorite wine bar ever ‘Jake’s on 6th ‘ or maybe we could make it travel to different places.  Ok.  That’s what we’re going to do.”

And, that’s what we’re doing.  We are inspired by the site-specific work that’s happening around town- the La Jolla Playhouse is presenting a festival, and of course we love San Diego Dance Theater’s Trolley Dances.  It’s a crazy idea- but it’s not a new one.  Site-specific work is EVERYWHERE.  Festivals, street performers, dance- it’s an incredible part of performance history.  We’re so happy to delve into this great tradition.

   2. We love an adventure!

It’s so important for us to try new things.  We don’t believe there is one way to make a play, especially when you’re dealing with so many different subject matters.  Every community we work with is different and the plays we make should reflect that.  Site-Specific work is exciting, and a little dangerous, and very unpredictable.  But it’s also so organic to be in the real world performing real stories!  It just makes sense.  And while we can’t predict how each show will play out in the environment we’re working in, we can train our actors to be ready for whatever comes their way and take on these challenges as part of the performance.  This is what’s fun- the element of surprise.  This is the stuff that thrills us as performing artists!  We think it will be exciting to our audiences as well.

   3. San Diego is incredible.

Duh.  Why not site-specific?  We live in this beautiful city with these beautiful businesses and we’re telling stories of its residents.  It just makes a lot of sense!  We’re community-based for crying out loud, why wouldn’t we make a play that takes place right dab-smack in the middle of a community?

Our hope is that this play is wildly successful and it becomes a staple in our season.  Not the same play over and over, but a new piece that tells different stories each year in different San Diego locations.  Hillcrest was the right place for us this year because we have a lot of history in that wonderful neighborhood, and for this particular version of the play we wanted to be in the part of town that celebrates diversity, just like we do.

So don’t be scared friends, join us on this new journey.  Take the plunge, buy your ticket, arrive at Jake’s on 6th at least 10 minutes early (give yourself plenty of time to find parking!) And fall in love with us in this very love-filled month.  It’ll feel reeeaaal nice.  We promise.

Love is an Adventure!

Today Patrick Kelly the director of 'San Diego, I Love You' tells us a bit about the piece and the process.

As we hurtle through the beginnings of 2013, work here at CCdd is never ending. Luckily I have the pleasure of directing our amazing first piece of the year “San Diego, I Love You”.  The number one question that I get regarding the piece is "what is this walking tour adventure play thingy?" so I thought I'd take some time explaining how the piece works and why it is so close to my heart.

I am a strong believer that art can and should happen anywhere. I've loved the idea of site-specific work since first studying the "happenings" and "environmental theater" movement of the 1960's.  It has been my dream to bring a little bit of experimentation to San Diego for a while and I am glad to have such an amazing group of out of the box thinkers to help me do it.

“San Diego, I Love You” was written by company members Katherine Harroff and Soroya Rowley and is based on love stories from different members of the local theater community.  The writers were able to construct a wonderfully funny piece broken up into 5 short scenes set in specific hillcrest locations that follows the friendship of Chris and Alex who accidently fall out of the friend zone and into the complicated miasma of love.  In each scene our main characters are played by different talented actors who show that a simple love story can transcend the bounds of basic gender relationships while maintaining a fantastic linear through line.  As a small tour of 10 people you and your fellow audience members will start at Jakes on 6th wine bar and be lead through the streets of Hillcrest becoming the proverbial fly on the wall in this journey of love.  For the convenience and ease of our patrons we have chosen locations all within a 4 block radius, but I'd still suggest you dress comfortably and wear good walking shoes you can stand in.

As for the process, it's going incredibly well!  We have a group of 11 amazingly talented performers who bring the emotions of this tumultuous love affair to vivid life and 5 incredible business owners who have generously opened their doors for us to come and play.  I look forward to seeing all of you there so buy you tickets now before they run out!

CCdd's Favorite RomCom's

We've been in love-land for quite a bit now.  "San Diego, I Love You" has put us in the cuddling spirit, and we want to get you there too.  We've asked every company member what their favorite Romantic Comedy was and here are the answers we've collected.  Get ready to feel the romance!

Patrick Kelly: "Stranger Than Fiction"

Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal are an unlikely couple in this delightful story, and the unlikeliness of it all warms our Technical Director's cold dead heart.  Patrick is also the director of "San Diego, I Love You" so he has been getting extra dosages of romance whilst working with the amazing cast of the show.  Thanks for sharing Patrick, you big teddy bear you.

Sam Ginn: "Adventures in Babysitting"

Ginn gives us a little blast from the past with her favorite action-packed pick.  And Elizabeth Shue thanks her for the accolades.  Check out a clip from the top-notch performance provided by this leading lady:

Crystal Brandon:  "Never Been Kissed"

First of all, a big fat WELCOME to the newest CCdd Company Member, Crystal!  We are so happy to have you in our corner little lady!  Second- who knew this gal was a Drew Barrymore fan?!  There is a lot to love.  Thanks Crystal!

Evan Kendig: "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"

Who doesn't love Evan?  And who doesn't love Vampire puppets?  Or Hawaii?  Or a naked Jason Segel? Not anyone we know!  Good choice Evan!

Soroya Rowley: "500 Days of Summer"

The co-author of "San Diego, I Love You" knows love.  Trust us.  Girl gets it.  I mean, come on- between Joseph Gordon Levitt's dancing and Zooey's doe-like face, this pic is solid love-oozing gold.

Justin Warren Martin: "Amélie"

This visually beautiful french flick is well worth the subtitles.  So sweet, so touching, so romantic.  That Justin- he has good taste.

Katherine Harroff: "A Thing Called Love"

The other half of the "San Diego, I Love You" writing duo offers this country-lovin River Phoenix classic as her favorite romantic inspiration.  We miss you River!

Melissa Coleman-Reed: "Brown Sugar"

Speaking of Miss. Melissa- make sure you check her out in "The Bluest Eye" at Moxie!  Melissa offers up some Taye Diggs for our love list.  Not bad, not bad at all!

Ashley Toolan: "Robin Hood Men in Tights"

When we asked Ashley if she was serious about this choice she responded with: "It's my fave movie of anything"....and you just can't argue with that logic!  We miss you Ash!

Shaun Tuazon: "The Wedding Singer"

And we're two for two with the Drew Barrymore lovers!  Way to go us!  This is a great choice, Adam Sandler and Drew were a great duo in their day.  Let's hope Sandler stays away from playing his own romantic interest in the future.

Great choices team!  We predict a slumber-party romantic movie-marathon in the future!

"San Diego, I Love You" tickets are going fast friends.  Make sure you purchase yours today by pushing that orange button at the top left corner of the blog, and spread the love!

Circle's love affair with Jake's on 6th.

Rehearsals for our site-specific performance piece "San Diego, I Love You" are in full swing and love is in the crisp air!  We're really excited about it and we promise our audiences a lot of fun.

We're also incredibly excited to be able to utilize a long, wonderful relationship with one of our favorite local businesses Jake's on 6th as our starting location for the event.  If you've never had the opportunity to visit this wonderful place we beyond highly recommend it.  The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the wine and beer selection is awesome, and most importantly the people are some of our favorite people on the planet.

Way back in the day, our new-to-San Diego Artistic Director worked at the freshly opened establishment.  The Totah family, owners of the bar, took her in and supported her dreams with encouraging words and a little financial stability- which definitely helped her make San Diego a long-time home.

After moving on career-wise Jake's still remained a staple in not only Katie's life, but the incredible Jake's family helped her dream of running this incredible company by opening their doors for us to host several fundraisers so we could produce our first production 'The Break-Up/Break-Down' and more.  These events helped us financially, and made a big difference in our ability to move forward on our plans.  We will never be able to express our gratitude to these amazing people and all their support of us.

As you can see, there has been a lot of good times with Circle and Jake's.  One of our first and favorite company shoots showed off this love as well:

We are so proud of this amazing relationship that we've been able to continue throughout the growth of both of our lives in San Diego.  We love Jake's on 6th!  And we can't wait to share this business with our audience members at our awesome upcoming show "San Diego, I Love You", which is on sale now!  Click that orange button on the left of this blog and grab your tickets today before we run out!
