CCdd Save-the-date: Morp!

Circle has big hopes for our November 'LARPer' show- which is also in development along with our Trolley Dances Installation project.  Thanks to our Kickstarter campaign we are on top financially since everything we made off "The Break-Up/Break-Down" went directly into our bank account for our future projects.  Which is great!  BUT- like everyone on the planet save Mark Zuckerberg or Oprah- we need more cash.

This is simply because we want to get better at what we do, and explore more unique and exciting ways to create our shows.

For example- we hope to have a budget for giant puppets!  The LARPer world is full of monsters and creatures that we want to re-create in cool and exciting ways- but that takes a budget.  (I googled "D&D Monsters, and the one pictured is my personal favorite...a rhino with a gun???!?)

So, on our blog we are formally announcing our biggest fundraising event yet!  On September 30th we are hosting a Morp at the Space 4 Art downtown! A 'Morp' is otherwise known as a backwards Prom.  Over a year ago Patrick, Brendan, and Katie went to a "Vintage Prom" hosted by the Pearl hotel in Pt. Loma.  It was fun, and it was packed!  The San Diego Arts Community loves a good costume party.  The only thing this event was lacking was a dance floor!

So, we came up with the idea to host our own party.  A Morp is the opposite of a Prom.  So we will encourage our guests to dress in any outlandish un-promly attire they can come up with!  Want to wear a neon onesie?  Do it at our Morp!  Have a Chicken costume that is collecting dust?  Well balk on down to our event!  Dressed as a Storm-Trooper to Comic-con and want to relive the memory?  Well now you have a venue to do it at!  We will be hosting costume contests for prizes for the most outlandish anti-prom outfits, as well as picking out a Morp Queen and King- so pull out all the stops!

On top of the fun of dressing up, we will also have live music, and a DJ so you can boogie all night!  We will have photographers on site to catch the memories, and of course it wouldn't be a Circle party if there weren't adult beverages! Woo-hoo!

We will be posting more information on the event soon- but this is your "save-the-date" blog post so we can get the party started!

Trolley Exploration

Here are some pictures of Artistic Director Katie, Technical Director Patrick, and Managing Director Brendan exploring the Trolley Route for this year's Trolley Dances with San Diego Dance Theater.  We went on the introductory tour to start brainstorming what our piece with the group would look like.

This Sunday is our first meet-up rehearsal!

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

All pictures are by the fabulous Rich Soublet!

For those of you who didn't know, Rich is a fabulous photographer and is available for Headshots, production photos, weddings, special events, and much more!  This morning he took pictures of a sexy dancer with a guitar and they looked print-worthy.  Holla!

'Circle Abroad': A Company Member's Quest For Higher Education Pt. 1

We decided in order to stay connected to our far away company member Ashley, we would make her blog for us monthly!  So, you lucky Circle-lovers out there, welcome to our monthly installment of 'Circle Abroad!'  (We realize Boston isn't Abroad, but it's away from our home-base, so it kind of works....)  Here is what the beautiful Ashley had to say from her far-away land:

Hello from Boston all of our beautiful CCdd lovers!  As many of you know, I had the difficult task of leaving San Diego a few months ago.  I have come to Boston to pursue my Masters Degree in Arts Administration from Boston University.

After launching CCdd with this fantastic group of people, it became inherently clear what I was meant to do- and that meant that I needed to go back to school.  A good friend of mine from my undergrad days at UMASS Amherst sent me a link to Boston University's Arts Administration degree program.  I took one look and though, HOLY CRAP!  THIS IS IT!  THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!  So I applied and managed to get accepted- all within about 10 days, it was pretty crazy.  At the same time, I was searching high and low for a similar grad program in San Diego.  I couldn't bear to think about leaving "America's Finest City", after all, it has that title for a reason!  After accepting the fact that no other school in San Diego, or even California for that matter offered the same program, I had to deal with the fact that I was going to have to move back to the cold and snow and miserable winter life of New England.  Leaving behind CCdd and all of my best friends in the world was incredibly hard and emotional.  I've been gone for almost 2 months now, and it still makes me sad.

As hard as it is, I know it is all for something so amazing!  I am going to be starting classes in about a month, and I am so very looking forward to it!  I'm actually very excited to be going back to school and to be learning things that I actually want to learn about.  I'm also excited to be moving into a cute house with some other girls in my program, one of them is even from San Diego!

The hardest part so far, is the job searching.  As we all know, the Arts industry isn't exactly booming, so unfortunately finding a well paying stable job with a theater is out of the question.  I've met with several staffing agencies, spent hours upon hours on Craigslist, CareerBuilder, Monster- you name it, and so far I've only gone to 2 interviews.  I'm hoping an awesome job is just around the corner, and if not, I guess i'll be putting all my past dance classes to good use at the local strip club...  I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Until next time!

-Ashley Toolan

We love you Ashley.

Trolley Dances and CCdd!

As we have mentioned before, CCdd has the honor of participating in one of the most exciting performance pieces that San Diego has to offer- the Trolley Dances.  I thought I'd take a moment today in our blog and give you a little insight into how cool this performance really is- and just how excited we are to participate this year.

Trolley Dances was founded by the fabulous Jean Isaacs of San Diego Dance Theater 13 years ago.  Jean brought the concept to San Diego after experiencing something similar in Switzerland.  She was inspired by how site-specific performance art set in beautiful landscapes or fantastic locations allowed for some of the most compelling performances she has ever seen.  Site-specific performance can illuminate a location and bring together a community- something that CCdd is all about.

The set-up is simple.  You get on a Trolley at a specific location in San Diego and you travel to different performance locations to view different dances created by several different choreographers.  In the past the Trolley took audiences to innovative dances set in grocery stores, museums, water fountains, parks, airports, libraries, hotel pools, parking lots, and many other locations some glamorous- some intentionally not.  All of these locations are utilized to illuminate each setting with beautiful choreography and some of the best dancers in San Diego.  Many of whom have gone on to have amazingly successful careers in choreography and dance such as Monica Bill Barnes and Kyle Abraham.  It's such a fabulous experience for both the performers and the audience that should be shared by all.

And this year Jean Isaacs wants US to be a part of it!

I was part of Trolley Dances last year as a tour guide, and an administrative help and I loved every second of it.  After attending the performance several times, my only desire was to figure out a way to make the ENTIRE time you are participating in the show an actual performance.  So CCdd has been given the opportunity to come up with creative ways to transition the audience from one site to another, and maintain the performance energy that sometimes lags in travel time.

It is a wonderful challenge for us to take advantage of as theatrical performers.  How do you make a traveling performance work?  What kind of theatre piece can we create that will work with the "Trolley Dances" aesthetic?  How do we maintain OUR mission in the meantime?

Tomorrow marks the start of our development with this project as many of the company will be riding taking the ride with Jean and her band of choreographers tomorrow for the first time!  We have many ideas already in mind, but until we see what we are working with it is impossible to solidify the work.

So here we go!  Embarking into our next performance and our first collaborative experience with a separate company!  So exciting!

Check out information on Trolley Dances HERE!

We hope you all can make it!

If you happen to be a fabulous dancer they are holding auditions this Sunday!  Get it!

Guest Blog Feature: NEW Company Member Melissa Coleman-Reed!

While we were in rehearsal for "The Break-Up/Break-Down" it was quickly apparent that one cast member was working her fine ass off in helping make the show the best it could be.  Melissa went above and beyond the already heavy duties we piled on everyone involved in this show.  Every day she shopped, ran errands for us and was basically a superhero to our entire crew- not to mention she was stunning to watch on stage.  One day I just asked her if she had any interest in being a company member- and without hesitation she said yes.  The rest is history.

I asked Melissa to describe what it has been like for her, working with CCdd, and this is what she shared:

The art of creation is always on my mind.
I believe in the power of like attracting like, (partially thanks to one, Ms Oprah Winfrey).
I like feeling-being responsible for that connection in my life.
I love the thought that what you put out into the world, the universe, comes back to you.
I absolutely believe in the power of limbo.
No... not the "region on the border of hell or heaven" reserved for unbaptized dead babies.
No... not that snazzy island dance where you shimmy your body under a horizontal stick.
But more that
twisting black-hole state-of-mind where you don't know what's coming next or what your next move should be.
I like that place. I like it a lot.
Because I know, that when I find myself bobbing on those cloudy waves, something massive is right 'round the bend.
As an Artist that spot for me is Golden. The Possibilities are wide open.
Inspiration is hurtling like an asteroid toward me.
I know it. I feel it.

Let me take you back to a few months ago when I had a great phone chat with one of my dearest friends, in which I exploded,
"Man, what's happening?! I feel stuck! I'm bored! Where is everybody? I used to have a crew, dammit! Where's my mutha-effin' crew?!?! What am I doing with myself? I need Something to Happen!!!" Which essentially translates to the fact that, as my friends are getting older, marrying, and happily finding themselves in the family way, a major shift is happening with those relationships. Change was a-happening and I found myself floating, waiting, trying to figure this new place out. This growing space. Something new had to be on its way, right? It happened to be precious little babies for every person under the sun around me. But what new little bundle was on its way for me? What would be my baby to help nurture and grow? I, unwittingly, put out into the ether a need that surprised me, caught me off guard.

Lets cut to me mindlessly surfing Facebook, where I discovered a private message. From Patrick Kelly. Where I was invited to be a part of a table read for a new piece with a newly formed company who wanted to do a little something to shake up the San Diego theatre community. Immediately, I was intrigued because the unknown is where it's at for me. I walked into that initial reading, was literally embraced, laughed my ass off while having the best time with people who I'd known in passing through auditions or from performances around the city.Brief encounters with beautiful people who I never managed to really hook up with. But I left, knowing instantly, that I was about to be a part of something delicious. That feeling only blossomed further when we finished our reading at the Diversionary. The air that night was electric. My heart was pounding. Wine was a-flowing. I truly felt like I was in a dream. Immediately the buzz started to grow around our show and I knew I had to be all in. One Hundred and Fifty Percent.

My state of limbo was instantly replaced with a full-fledged desire to give whatever I could to help make this show a success. Anyone who knows me, knows the mild obsession I have always had for Halloween. They know that I really do start planning my costume out sometime in the spring (or summer if I'm slacking). So to be able to lend my super-human skills of bargain hunting & shopping to help costume The Break Up Break Down was the best! I got to make an adult-sized diaper for a full-grown man! Who strutted around in it with nothing but wings on his back, glowing with pride. I rinsed that sweaty diaper out with my bare hands every week because I loved this show, this company and these darling, demented, delightful people. I am still bursting with sheer joy at having been asked by Ms Katherine Harroff to be a company member. As said by Brendan, its been a really long time since I've been apart of a show that was just so much fun! Where people were genuinely happy to be there whether in rehearsal, on-stage performing or just hanging out. Through the thick & the thin. These have been, for me, some of the most charmed months of my life.

Becoming a part of Circle Circle dot dot has fulfilled a long held dream of mine to be a part of a group that creates art on their own terms. Who does things their own way, not trying to fit into an accepted, traditional ideal of what theatre can be or offer the community. But who instead want to carve out their own space in this vast artistic universe. These are people who are passionate, loving, positive, fearless, hardworking, and devoted. And PS, wickedly Funny!

Like attracts like and I am happy to have found my crew again!
I am falling into some kind of love. ;o)
I ardently walk this knife-edge of creation & cannot wait to live through what we grow together next!
Word.
CR, out.
-Melissa Coleman-Reed
Thank you Melissa!  We are so honored to have you join our crew!
We held our first post-show company meeting last night and are already jumping into our next project!  Stay tuned as the insanity continues!
